Our History

Japan’s bridge for cross-border M&A since 1989.

Our History

In the late 1980s, middle-market acquisitions in the United States by Japanese companies were rare, and for good reason.

Expanding into the largest market in the world without the right strategic guidance, cultural fluency, or relationships was exceptionally risky.

We wanted to change that.

Takenaka Partners was founded in 1989 by Yukuo “Y.T.” Takenaka with the clear purpose to be the strategic and cultural bridge for Japanese companies looking to expand operations in the United States.

Our ground-breaking approach focused on three areas:

  • Helping Japanese companies successfully bridge the divide between Japanese corporate culture and U.S. business practices.
  • Proactively sourcing companies that filled a strategic gap for the buyer, such as expanded distribution, management capability, or market access.
  • Ensuring that an acquisition was mutually beneficial for both the buyer and seller.

To fulfill our firm’s purpose, we made certain that our senior leadership team had the experience and institutional pedigree to help our clients navigate complex deals. We also created Greenfield Research, which was instrumental in proactively sourcing the right buyer-seller relationships.

The Firm Today

Who We Are Today: A Boutique Consulting and M&A Firm with Global Reach

We are the oldest cross-border M&A firm with deep knowledge of the middle-market, and in multiple industries. Our work has spanned economic cycles, shifting markets, presidential and prime-minister cabinet transitions, and changing global conditions.

Since our founding, we’ve helped to close over 100 cross-border transactions. And now as part of Yamada Consulting Group, we offer our clients access to over 1,000 professionals and a broad global network across Asia, the U.S., and Europe.

What remains true for Takenaka Partners is our commitment to our clients. We remain a high-touch, high-value, relationship oriented, boutique M&A firm.

While the world has changed since 1989, successful cross-border M&A transactions still require relationships built on trust, shared goals, and a careful understanding of people, markets, and cultures.
